Personal Effects Container Shipments
 Information Guide

How are you getting the goods into the container?  The container will be delivered on a truck chassis which is designed for dock level loading.  Therefore, the container will be approx 5-6 ft in the air.  There are no ramps with an ocean container.  The container will be left at your residence for 2 hours with no additional charges.  Loading time above this will result in additional waiting and needs to be arranged at the time of booking.

To get you a price we need the following information:

1/ Place of pick up
2/ Place of delivery—your goods can either be delivered to a specific address (not available in all countries) or a terminal port at destination from where you can arrange your own delivery
3/ Whether the container will contain a vehicle or not, if so, we need to know the year make and model

Your price will include transportation and Canadian documentation charges only.  We do not provide customs clearance at destination.  We will advise you of pre-shipment inspections or special certificates or legalization that may be required and the associated costs for these.  However, ensuring you meet entry requirements is your responsibility.  You will have to arrange clearance with the foreign customs authorities at destination or hire a destination broker to do this for you.

We do not provide packaging.   Your goods should be packaged with the voyage in mind. The container will be picked up by large cranes and placed on the vessel which can cause load shifting.  The container will be crossing an ocean  during which weather can cause the container to move and the goods to shift.

If you are shipping a car it must be professionally blocked, braced and rendered non-hazardous.  We can arrange and quote you a price to do this.  The car must be delivered with just enough fuel to load and unload.

When packaging, please keep in mind that most countries have wood restrictions against wood exported from Canada.  Therefore any crates, skids, pallets, dunnage etc must either be ISPM 15 compliant and so marked or you should use processed materials such as particle board, plywood or OSB in order to comply with wood entry requirements of the foreign country.

Shipments must not contain food items, weapons, ammunition, explosives, or any hazardous materials.  Hazardous materials include things like paint, oils, lubricants, fuels or anything under pressure, such as tanks of any compressed gases.  If you have any doubt about whether your goods can be shipped please check with us before packing as removal of items after delivery to the terminal will be extremely expensive.

We insure goods against total loss only, not damage.  Since you package the goods, any damage will be your risk.  If you feel the goods were mishandled by the line causing damage, you would have to claim against the shipping line at destination.  The cost for total loss insurance is 0.30/$100 value.  You must insure for 110% of the value of the goods plus the freight.

At the time of booking we will require the following information from you:

1/ Date for pick up or drop off

We will provide you:

1/ Confirmation of price
2/ Booking number from shipping line
3/ Shipment details-vessel name, sailing dates, ETAs (note an ETA is just that-an ESTIMATED time of arrival.  There is no guarantee of arrival time as many factors can affect this including weather, congestion, customs, etc)
4/ The name of the agent at destination with whom you should contact at least a week prior to the ETA to get an update on your shipment.
5/ Documentation Cut Off Date

By the documentation cut-off date you must provide to us:

1/ Copy of your passport
2/ Your name and full address and contact information in Canada for the BL (if you are only a short term visitor to Canada your full address and contact info at your permanent residence)
3/ Name and full address and contact information (must include a telephone number) at destination.  If you do not have an address at time of export a C/O address and tel will be sufficient
4/ A valued itemized packing list of what you are shipping.
5/ Payment—we can only accept cash, wire transfer, certified cheque or money order.  Cheques and money orders are to be made payable to Alliance World Transport Inc.
